Great Greek Gala showcase fun at Newbarns

Pupils from Newbarns Primary and Nursery School showcased their understanding of classical history at a Great Greek Gala.

The children have been learning about the topic of Ancient Greece in their English, history and art lessons throughout the last term and all of their learning culminated in a celebratory family event.

Families were invited to the school to see an exhibition of the children’s artwork and the children talked to the parents about how the art was created and what they had learnt.

Then the parents were invited to sample Greek food and enjoy a performance from the 60 Year 5 pupils with Greek dancing, acting and singing.  They retold famous myths and legends such as the story of Theseus and the Minotaur, Daedalus and Icarus and also Pandora’s Box.

Deputy Headteacher Victoria Fitzgibbons said it had been an amazing event and the pupils had all entered into the spirt of it wholeheartedly.

“We love to bring learning to life and the children really showed they had understood the topic we have been studying this term,” she said.

“The pupils dressed in Greek costumes and performed Greek dancing. They showcased wonderful acting, some hilarious jokes and fantastic singing including old and modern songs in a script which staff had devised especially for the show.”

“We want to say a massive thank you to all staff, children and parents for making this evening such a success.”
