Newbarns staff celebrate awards

We are delighted to celebrate the achievements of staff at Newbarns who have been recognised at this year’s SCMAT Staff Awards alongside three colleagues whose dedication has been recognised through Long Service Awards.

The annual awards celebrate colleagues from across the Trust who exemplify SCMAT’s aims of Inspire, Succeed and Contribute, recognising the dedication, professionalism and care they bring to their roles every day. We are incredibly proud of our staff and the positive difference they make to the lives of our pupils, families and the wider school community.

Unsung Hero (Succeed)

Gail Brennan received the Unsung Hero Award in recognition of her unwavering commitment to supporting pupils, particularly those with additional needs. Gail works tirelessly behind the scenes, ensuring every child feels valued, listened to and supported both academically and emotionally. Through her kindness, compassion and dedication, she builds trusting relationships with pupils and families, helping children to develop confidence, resilience and achieve their full potential. As a valued member of the school’s ELSA team, Gail’s selfless commitment and quiet determination make a lasting difference every day.

Scott Shaw also received the Unsung Hero Award for his incredible contribution to every aspect of school life. Always willing to lend a hand, Scott approaches every challenge with enthusiasm, positivity and a smile. Whether supporting pupils, staff or the wider school community, he is an integral part of Newbarns Primary & Nursery School. His infectious energy, willingness to help and unwavering commitment ensure the school runs smoothly, often without seeking recognition for the many ways he goes above and beyond.

Inspirational Innovator (Inspire)

Matt Thornhill was recognised with the Inspirational Innovator Award for the enthusiasm and positivity he brings to the classroom every day. Since joining Newbarns, Matt has inspired pupils through his passion for teaching, creativity and genuine love of learning. His engaging approach has made a significant impact on his class, and colleagues describe him as “sunshine in human form” for the positivity and encouragement he brings to school life.

Paula Fermoyle also received the Inspirational Innovator Award after inspiring colleagues and pupils alike through her determination and personal achievements. Motivated to step outside her comfort zone, Paula went from completing Couch to 5K to successfully running the London Marathon in just one year. Her commitment, resilience and willingness to embrace new challenges have inspired those around her to believe in themselves and strive to achieve their own goals.

Community Champion (Contribute)

Alyx Dickie received the Community Champion Award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the wider life of the school. Alyx gives generously of her own time to lead and support a wide range of extra-curricular activities, from Kwik Cricket and girls’ football to launching a new after-school Zumba club. She also accompanies pupils to sporting competitions, encouraging participation, confidence and teamwork. Loved by pupils and admired by colleagues, Alyx’s enthusiasm and dedication have made a lasting impact on the school community.

Emily Kavanagh was also recognised as a Community Champion for the incredible contribution she makes across the school. Emily’s versatility, positivity and willingness to support wherever needed have made her an invaluable member of the team. From working in the school office and supporting SEND administration to helping in Year 6, The Hive and organising staffing and school events, Emily approaches every task with enthusiasm and professionalism. Her calm, can-do attitude and unwavering support for colleagues make her an essential part of the Newbarns community.

Celebrating Long Service

The school was also proud to recognise three colleagues whose years of dedicated service have made a lasting contribution to generations of children and families.

• Heather Lawson – 30 years’ service
• Paula Price – 30 years’ service
• Paul Randell – 27 years’ service

Their loyalty, commitment and passion for education have helped shape the Newbarns community over many years, and we thank them for their outstanding service.
