Pupils at Newbarns School are enjoying a series of unforgettable physical education lessons thanks to former Barrow Raiders player Ellis Archer.
A total of 52 pupils from Year 6 have taken part in the dynamic sessions, which combine high-energy drills, teamwork exercises and expert insights into professional rugby league.
The visits are part of the school’s ongoing commitment to promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyles. He has spent the first part of the summer term coaching Year 6 and will now spend the rest of this term coaching Year 5.
During the sessions, organised through Advantage Raiders, the scrum half has introduced students to a range of core rugby league skills, including passing drills, tackle techniques (non-contact), and agility-based games designed to improve coordination and teamwork.
Pupils also had the opportunity to quiz him on his journey as a professional athlete and experiences with the Barrow Raiders and his most recent team Workington Town.
Sophie Broadbent, who leads PE at Newbarns School which is part of South Cumbria Multi-Academy Trust, said it was amazing for the children to learn from someone who plays the game professionally.
“Having Ellis here brought such excitement to the lesson. He was fantastic with the children – encouraging, patient and full of energy. The pupils were absolutely buzzing afterwards and are now desperate to play tag rugby!”
She thanked Ellis and Barrow Raiders for their time inspiring the next generation to stay active and develop a passion for sport.
