Teacher Crowned Cumbria’s Best

A teacher from at Newbarns Primary and Nursery School has been named Cumbria’s Teacher of the Year at the glittering Golden Apple Awards ceremony.

Sophie Broadbent, Year 6 teacher and PE Lead, took home the top prize at the event, which celebrates the very best in education across the county.

The awards recognise teachers, apprentices and school staff who go above and beyond for their pupils.

Sophie said she was completely taken aback when her name was announced.

“It was really unexpected. I genuinely couldn’t believe I’d won.

“It was a wonderful event and it was very emotional hearing all the stories from around the county.

“I feel very, very grateful because every teacher in every school deserves recognition – we all put so much into it.”

Sophie manages the school’s entire sports curriculum alongside teaching Year 6.

She has transformed sporting and extracurricular life for the 400 pupils at Newbarns, introducing activities such as netball, cricket, dance, tag rugby, tennis, hockey and chess, as well as professional coaching in karate and kickboxing.

“I think I was nominated because of my enthusiasm and my belief in making sport and learning fun and inclusive. The children and their parents really appreciate that, and that means everything to me,” she said.

Her energy and commitment extend well beyond the classroom. Sophie regularly gives up evenings, weekends and school holidays to run clubs, support competitions and accompany pupils on residentials — all to ensure every child has the chance to find a sport or activity they love.

Her dedication was even highlighted in the school’s most recent Ofsted report, where her work to enrich the life of the school community was praised.

Interim Headteacher Victoria Fitzgibbons said Sophie was an exceptional role model whose passion for teaching and commitment to pupils is second to none.

“She is a true team player who goes above and beyond for her pupils and colleagues every single day. We couldn’t be prouder to see her hard work and positivity recognised in this way.”

Sophie was one of two staff from South Cumbria Multi-Academy Trust schools recognised at the event, with Olivia Mathers from Ormsgill Nursery and Primary School also honoured as a finalist in the Best Apprentice category.
