MegaMAT swimming and basketball success

Pupils made a splash at the MegaMAT Swimming Gala held at Barrow Leisure Centre this month.

Around 20 teams took part in the event, which is part of a full year multi-sports competition is backed by South Cumbria Multi-Academy Trust, to help build pupils confidence, leadership and teamwork through sport.

Organiser Katy Costa, Chetwynde’s Phase 2 Lead and PE teacher, was a finalist in the recent Love Barrow Awards for her work to launch the Primary MegaMAT Games.

She said: “The swimming gala is becoming a firm favourite with primary schools who enter the MegaMAT Games. It was packed full of excellent competitive swimming and cheering from the sidelines.”

The MegaMAT Games concluded with a basketball tournament played over two weeks at Hoops.

Dane Ghyll were first, Yarlside second and Holy Family and Chetwynde secured joint third.

Katy said: “Well done to all teams involved and an extra special thank you to our senior students for their refereeing. We also ran a development league for basketball last week with lots of schools taking part and learning new skills.”

In addition, Chetwynde Primary School scooped gold in both its swimming races in the recent north-west rounds and secured another place in the ESSA National Primary Championships in Sheffield – this will be the school’s 27th consecutive year at this prestigious event. Congratulations to you all!
