Trust holds first Multicultural Day

Pupils will celebrate the diverse nationalities across in their schools at the first South Cumbria Multi-Academy Trust Multicultural Day.

Each school in the Trust is organising a day of events on Friday (June 7th) to highlight countries in the school community and learn more about their customs.

There will be range of activities for the children including learning languages, traditional songs and dance, food tasting and crafts.

Children at Chetwynde, Ormsgill, Vickerstown, South Walney Juniors, Cambridge and Newbarns schools, who are all part of SCMAT, will take part.

They will be joined by pupils from Victoria, South Walney and Ramsden infant schools and Greengate Junior Schools, who are all associate members of the Trust.

Ormsgill Primary and Nursery School Assistant Headteacher Jessica Corless said the event had been organised by the modern foreign languages network group.

“We have a cross-MAT group of teachers who work to develop language provision in the Trust,” she said.

“We are extremely excited to launch this event, which will help immerse our children in the richness of the diverse communities across our schools.

“A love of languages, combined with a deeper understanding of the various cultures and customs of families across our schools, can only serve to benefit our children.”

Newbarns Primary and Nursery School Headteacher Gary Birkett said the school is celebrating the country of Ukraine, inspired by its Ukrainian families.

“We have welcomed a number of families from Ukraine to school and this is a perfect opportunity to invite them in to give our pupils chance to find out more about the country and its culture first-hand and ask questions.”
